Record numbers visit Ireland Angling 2010

Expo 2010

The expectations of Ireland’s angling community for this year’s Ireland National Angling Show were well and truly met at The National Show Centre in Swords, Dublin on the 13th & 14th February 2010. Over the two days, up to 9,000 anglers took the opportunity to visit what is now the biggest angling event in Ireland and bargains on many of the top brands of fishing gear were the order of the day. The Ireland Angling 2010 Show didn’t disappoint the thousands of attendees, they were treated to an exciting, action-packed couple of days and heard from the pros as they illustrated their fishing techniques with demonstrations to suit expert and novice anglers alike. They got advice on how to select the right rods, reels, hooks and lures to suit their particular fishing.

Ireland Angling 2010 was officially opened by Jack Charlton, renowned angler and a fan of Irish fishing and presenter of "Total Fishing" Matt Hayes. The show included lots of exciting new features, such as a Showcase Zone with a Central Casting Pool, a Theatre,
Fly-tying demos and Interactive Youth Zone run by Des Chew of the Dublin Angling Initiative.

And if meeting the pros and visiting the exhibitors’ stands wasn’t enough, the introduction of the designated fly tying platform proved to be a very popular addition to the show, anglers were able to view how to tie and present their flies like a pro by World Champion
Fly Tyers such as Peter Kealey, Peter Dunne, Ryan Houston and Declan Tuffy. Over the weekend, experts such as Matt Hayes, Mary Gavin Hughes and Jim Clohessy gave an array of lively presentations and the popular casting pool gave spectators a perfect vantage point to see how Glenda Powell, Charles Jardine, Paddy Mc Donnell, Stevie Munn and Packie Trotter demonstrated their skills in a very entertaining manner as well as offering free tuition and instructions to the audience.

Organiser Hugh Bonner, Mara Media, said: “The show has been a huge success. The turnout is way over what we were expecting and we are delighted that everyone enjoyed what we put together. We made the show bigger, better and more interactive than last year
and brought together more experts on game, sea and coarse angling than you can shake your rod at. The Showcase Zone is in the centre of the venue was fantastic as visitors got to see all the experts in action. We are already looking forward to next year!”
Jack Charlton added: “I was delighted when Hugh asked me to be involved with the Ireland Angling Show. As you know I am a big fan of Irish fishing and this really is a fantastic event showcasing all that is wonderful about this sport. I would encourage more people to
take up the sport as it’s superb for both your physical and mental health.”

Particular praise has gone to both Jack Charlton and Matt Hayes who remained composed, showed immense kindness, and remained accessible to members of the public for autographs and photo requests throughout the show. Plans are already well advanced for Ireland Angling 2011 which will be held on the 12th & 13th February next year.

David Wolsoncroft- Dodds - has specialised in fly-fishing for pike. He has developed techniques which allow him to catch pike from many types of water throughout the year.
David’s pike-flies are practical and effective. They are solutions to fish-catching problems rather than an end in themselves. They are well constructed and durable – most important when you look at a pike’s impressive set of teeth!
David has caught pike (up to 32lb 4oz) with these flies from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Holland and the Swedish Baltic. He’ll be happy to offer any help you need to catch pike yourself.

When is the event taking place?

MATT HAYES   “The places I fish, the people I fish with and the mastery of so many different styles of fishing are my driving forces - I just love the big, wild places and the wild, uncaught fish. To me, the magic of fishing is mystery and uncertainty. I’ve been so lucky to fish in some of the greatest places in the world and the best part is that there are so many more blank pages in the fishing diary to fill."

Mary Gavin Hughes  Mary has been compared to as the modern day Pirate Queen Grace O’ Malley (Grainneuaile) of Clew Bay.  Her expert knowledge of the bay, from every small shoal of fish to the tricky reef currents, and best angling practices for catching the required catch establishes Mary as one of the most prestigious skippers in the west of Europe. People have often joked that Mary has the ability to pre-order your dream catch.

Mary takes great pride in being a woman of the sea & Europe’s only female Charter Skipper.  A legendary woman of the sea.

Jim Clohessy  Jim has been writing a monthly article for Irish Angler magazine since its launch in 2004. The popular “Dinghy Angler” articles are a collection of stories, advice and comment on small boat angling in Ireland. From wreck fishing thirty miles offshore for big cod and coalfish to stalking bass in a couple of feet of water; it’s all covered. “While I am happy chasing any species there is something magical about catching a specimen fish”. Over thirty years of angling has seen Jim catch lots of quality fish. “Our sport is changing all the time. It is my aim to keep up with the changes and bring the best of what is new to Irish anglers from an Irish perspective. Jim spoke at last year’s Angling show and proved a hit with all anglers, whatever their discipline!

How do I get there?

DUBLIN ANGLING INITIATIVE AND INTERACTIVE YOUTH ZONE

The Dublin Angling Initiative was set up in 1995. Its principle aims are to promote, develop and improve angling in the Dublin and Greater Dublin area and is sponsored by the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board.

During the summer months the main work of the initiative is taking young people from national and secondary schools, summer projects and youth services throughout Dublin city centre and its suburbs on fishing courses.

Already thousands of young people have been introduced to the joys of sea, coarse and game angling at the venues that are accessible by bus and rail from Dublin city centre. The initiative has also been a catalyst in setting up fishing clubs for many of these young people and given them a hobby they can enjoy for life.

The Dublin Angling Initiative team are looking forward to the challenge of running the Interactive Youth Zone at the Ireland Angling Expo in 2010.  Our aim will be to make this area an exciting and educational attraction where parents, families, schools and youth projects will want to participate.

The zone will provide a one stop area for kids wishing to either take up angling or improve their techniques. There will be interactive workshops on game, coarse and sea angling where youngsters can learn from the experts. There will be trace making and rigs for sea fishing, flytying for trout angling and bait presentation. Children will be able to handle the different types of bait for coarse and sea fishing. We will also have live fish species on display. It will be a colourful, welcoming and fun area where children will actually leave the show with a new found confidence on angling from the encouragement they receive from the Dublin Angling Initiative team.

Information on places to fish, clubs and the types of fish species will be available. We will also be running an ‘ask the expert’ show for children and parents. This will comprise of a panel of well known experts who will be giving their time and knowledge to benefit youth angling. We will have a variety of literature available to children free of charge. The Dublin Angling Initiative team working on the stand will have completed training in safe child protection procedure prior to the event. We look forward to passing on our experience and expertise to what is hoped will be a well attended show.  We expect that the Youth Zone will add great impetus and a family dimension to the 2010 angling expo.  Well known anglers will be on hand to share their expertise - Noel Shiels, Nick Parry, Brian Cooke, Paddy McDonnell, Eoin Schweppe, Kit Dunne and Henry Norton among others.
